With vast scale and diversity, India is the second most populated country in the world with 1.35 billion people. With rapid increase in urbanization, there is a tectonic shift towards consumption of ultra processed foods as well as foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) along with poor lifestyle habits leading to rise in several non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, obesity etc. At the same time, India is grappling with a huge burden of malnutrition. A total of 56 per 1000 children die before their 5th birthday, and 47.9 percent of children under the age of five are stunted. Half of pregnant women are anemic as are 74 percent of children under five. Only 46 percent of babies are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. Malnutrition is said to cost the Indian economy approximately $200 billion.
This double burden of malnutrition is a serious global challenge and one that we can’t meet unless we act upon it now. The Government of India, under the abled-guidance of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Damodar Modi is making several attempts to tackle this menace. The Mission Poshan Abhiyaan was also launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister on 8th March, 2018 in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. The focus of Abhiyaan is to lay emphasis on nutritional status of adolescent girls, pregnant women, lactating mothers and children from 0-6 years age.
Keeping this objective in mind, we at Nayaatara Foundation aspire to build a sustainable, ethical and nutritious food system and a thriving local economy. To achieve our mission, we are working tirelessly to spread awareness and education in our communities especially among women (both pregnant and lactating mothers) as well as adolescent girls through various targeted interventions.
Under this campaign, we are working on the concept of building ‘Nutritional Community Kitchens’ with support of local administration in various high burden districts across Northern regions of the country. The programme, through use of technology, convergence with district administration and community involvement strives to reduce the level of stunning, under-nutrition, Anemia and low birth weight in children, as also focus on adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers, thus holistically addressing the issue of malnutrition in our country. These Nutritional Kitchens will ensure that women and adolescent girls get access to nutritional meal in the lunch and also ensure diversification of diet with utilization of alternative crops like millets, oats and other traditional grains.
With support of our partners and donors, several Community based events (CBE) are being organised for regular training and capacity building efforts as well as mass awareness sessions to curb malnutrition.
We seek support for covering high burden districts in the State of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and J&K and look forward to the support of interested donors/ companies as part of their CSR funds.
